Seeing Anew: Earthly Presence
Beholding the beauty of the world beyond the news
The exhibition, “Seeing Anew: Earthly Presence” opens at the Canadian Pacific Gallery, Port Moody Arts Centre, BC, Canada on April 15, 2021 and runs to May 12, 2021. This solo show by local visual artist, Garrett Andrew Chong speaks to the story “Beholding the beauty of the world beyond the news” (i.e. politics, pandemics, headlines). After showings at the 2019 Britannia Art Gallery 2019, Eastside Cultural Centre 2018 and Eastside Culture Crawl 2019/2018, the mixed media artist will be featured in a Virtual Opening streamed on Facebook Live on April 15, 2021 @ 7:15pm. Two additional artists, Valerie Pugh – “Sur/veil: Who’s Looking, Whose Watching” and Taize Powell – “Melancholy”, will be exhibiting in the adjacent Ann Kitching and Suncor galleries.
“Seeing Anew: Earthly Presence” examines the interconnection of oneness by presenting a conversation with words and meditating into the visual art’s stillness. The pieces explore, interpret and juxtapose select prose, iconography and landscapes from ancient civilizations and sacred places including Angkor Temples in Cambodia, Shaolin Temple in China, Machu Picchu in Peru and vast natural wonders of North America. The artworks celebrate the beautiful kinship and spiritual intelligence in the age of intuition. They invite the viewer to behold the majestic earth anew by remaining present, by quieting their mind, and by reflecting upon our human search for being.
